Deepwater Halibut and Ling Cod

westport halibut fishingWe are eagerly awaiting confirmation for open halibut days in May.

The canyons that we fish are about a 90 minute boat ride from the Westport Marina.  We will be traveling 35-45 miles to get our fishing locations.

The typical depth of fish are in the 500-700 foot range and we use lead weights in the 2-3 lb range to get our baits down in the water.

The fishing can be demanding in the sense that reeling fish up from that depth can be tiresome.  We recommend you stay hydrated and be ready for a good fight.  Our halibut average in the 25-30lb range but they can definitely get bigger than that.

Our goal with this fishery is sustainability and we will NOT be culling through several fish per person to keep the biggest ones.  Having said that, if they are undersized we will return them to the water and continue our search.

While out deep we will also try to catch ling cod.  Sometimes the tactics we use will target both halibut and ling cod at the same time.  Its often a game of determining what lures or bait we will use based on what species of fish we already have onboard.

The 100% goal of our halibut charters is for everyone to come home with halibut.  Sometimes the ling cod don’t cooperate in the deep water, but the great news is that we can also move inside to shallower water to target them time depending.

Albacore Tuna

westport tuna fishingThank you for all of those that joined us on our albacore adventures in 2023.  We are just a few weeks away from opening up booking dates for the 2024.

Much like our halibut fishery, we will be offering some dates so that individuals can find space on an open boat.  The remainder of the days we will be looking to hire the boat out to a group. Those looking to book an entire boat will have priority over single seat requests.  The maximum number of anglers is 6, but for those booking the entire boat you are not required to bring 6 anglers and you will not have any other people put into your party if you have less than 6 anglers.

Albacore fishing out of Westport can be broken down into two categories: the troll and live bait.

Our platform lends itself to the best of both worlds.  The Carolina with it’s wide beam and diesel power plant does great trolling a 7 rod spread.  But once we hook up, we immediately will be switching over to live anchovies.  While there’s nothing like the buzz of a rod that is hit by a tuna while the boat is cruising along at 7 knots, there’s really nothing like the feeling of an albacore taking a live bait and pulling several hundred feet of line before you can get control of the fish.  Mix that with multiple hook ups and you’ll be part of what some have termed “the tuna dance.”

The process of trolling and converting to live bait is what we live for.  Some days it goes easy, some days you have to grind away at it.  We can assure you that we have every intention of filling our fish holds before it’s time to call it a day.

Salmon

After a few great impromptu Salmon trips last year, we’ve decided to open up a few trips for the 2024 king salmon season.  We will be mainly targeting the king salmon and are waiting for official opening dates before we open our bookings. Our availability will most likely be weekends in July.
